Museum Studies, San Diego Mesa College - September 2023
I heard about the Museum Studies program through another photographer and thought it sounded like a fascinating look at how museums and galleries actually work — and it was! The class took us on field trips to local museums, many of which I'd never visited before, and gave us access to some really interesting people: the exhibit designer at the Natural History Museum, museum directors, working artists, and more. The program runs two semesters and meets on Fridays — which, it turns out, is practically a ghost town at Mesa College, with very few other classes scheduled that day. Beyond the field trips, we tackled several projects and papers, and the highlight was organizing a show at Mesa's Art Gallery from scratch. We chose the theme, put out a call for entries, selected the works, and hung the show ourselves. I didn't end up taking the second semester — our company merged with another, and it didn't feel like the right time to keep a non-standard schedule.
