Carnaval SF, San Francisco, California - May 25, 2013
These images are from a workshop I took with Incredible Travel Photos and Oliver Klink. Saturday was spent in class covering street photography techniques and how to approach shooting a parade and its surrounding locations. Most of my images here are actually from the staging areas as everyone was getting ready — we had free access to wander around and photograph the participants as they costumed up and warmed up for the big show.
As part of the workshop we received press passes that allowed us to walk the parade route and mingle as much as we wanted. Unfortunately I didn’t capture many images of the actual parade itself, because my camera broke mid-shoot — the mirror detached while I was firing away. I had been hammering the multi-shot mode and racked up a huge number of frames, and I think the camera just finally gave up. Honestly, it was a great excuse to buy a new body! Canon ended up repairing the old one for free, as the mirror detachment turned out to be a known design defect they had identified years earlier.
