UTAdventure Workshop Road Trip - September 17, 2016

I headed out for a figure workshop with UTAdventure, with shooting planned across a variety of locations. My first stop was Lee Vining, California, with a quick visit to Yosemite National Park. From there I took a new route to Salt Lake City via Ely, Nevada. I stayed in Ely to visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum and ride their train — the museum is housed in the original administration buildings, roundhouses, and shops, making it a fascinating stop even beyond the train ride itself. I also made time to visit Great Basin National Park while I was in the area.

From Ely I drove on to Salt Lake City, Utah, where we met up for the workshop. It took us to Moab, Utah, where we shot in a variety of locations. After the workshop wrapped, I stayed in Moab for a couple of extra days to visit Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. I also stopped at Thompson Springs, Utah, with its collection of abandoned buildings — not quite a ghost town, but close. From there the route takes you through the Sego Canyon Petroglyphs and on to the Sego Canyon ghost town, which is made up of several miners' shacks, bridges where a train once crossed the river, a cemetery, and the shell of a large brick building. I had been out here once before — it's accessible by dirt road in a regular car, though on my first visit I came across a motorhome that had hung up on a dip in the road near the petroglyphs.

Leaving Moab, I had planned to stop near Monument Valley, but rain convinced me to push on. I passed through Flagstaff where the storm was beginning to clear, giving me great puffy clouds and a beautiful sunset to work with. I continued on into the Joshua Tree area and spent the night in Twentynine Palms before heading home.
