Hurricane, Utah – February 11, 2023
This trip started with a slight detour from the original plan — I was set to join a local off-road group at Sand Hollow, but they figured my Subaru wouldn’t be able to keep up. Their loss! I turned it into a photography trip instead. I kicked things off at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada before moving on to Hurricane, Utah, where I spent a few days exploring Zion National Park, Pipe Spring National Monument, and Snow Canyon State Park. While in Hurricane we got a light dusting of snow, and not knowing how much more might be on the way, I decided to head out a day early. That freed me up to add one more stop: the LA Art Show.
On the way back from Utah I pulled over to take in the Seven Magic Mountains sculpture outside Las Vegas — always worth a stop. I then took the scenic route into Los Angeles, picking up Route 66 from Amboy through to San Bernardino, where I stayed at the Wigwam Motel. The next morning I continued along Route 66 toward downtown Los Angeles.
At the LA Art Show I wanted to get a feel for the scale and style of work on display — I’ve been thinking about submitting some of my own work in a future year and this seemed like the right time to do some research.
