Western Portraits Workshop, Santa Fe, New Mexico, - July 21, 2025
Off to another workshop — this time in Santa Fe, New Mexico! I usually stop in Holbrook, Arizona at the Wigwam Motel, but this trip I decided to mix things up. My stopover on the drive out was Winslow, Arizona, where I stayed at the La Posada Hotel — an absolute Route 66 must-see. The hotel is set in the old Winslow train depot and Harvey House, and the trains still roll right past. You can even board here!
The workshop theme was Portraits of the West. We visited several working ranches, a horse rescue, a movie studio lot, and a local rodeo. The studio was actually used in the filming of 3:10 to Yuma — a movie I happened to catch on TV after I got home, which was a fun surprise. I've included a couple of shots from the TV screen showing a town view and some scenes inside the hotel, which was the most impressive building we had access to.
After the workshop wrapped up, I made one more stop before heading home — the Zaplin Lampert Gallery, where I got to see photographs by Edward Curtis. They were printed on glass plates with a gold background, giving them a really striking and distinctive look. From there it was back on the road, with a final overnight at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook.
